11 Summers

Could eleven summers ever be
enough to taste and touch and see
all the wondrous elements
that fashion this reality?

As innocence is laid to rest
will your conscience now attest
that hedonistic selfishness
helped the hand of death to wrest

one sprightly spark before it’s due,
causing you to surely rue
the budding flowers every spring
that signal summer will ensue.

*Dedicated to all the unfortunate victims of drunk drivers*

RCH,

Not an easy topic to try and put into words. I think you have captured very well, those thoughts of a young life lost, in this tragic way.

I applaud you even daring the topic and then again applaud how well done it is. It is touching and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing this piece.

Hi Eileen, Alexis, and Robb, it happened here in upstate NY a few years ago and that's when I wrote this, but lately they've been airing this really gut wrenching commercial about drunk driving on TV around here and I couldn't stop thinking of this poem. My prayers go out to anyone suffering from this crime.
