Partitioned

Retaining isn’t all they do
they stand for more than that
obstructing an improper view
or keeping out the cat;

at times they lend complete support
sometimes they’re just for show
defining a defenseless sort
with nowhere else to go—

so cry behind, or sit astride
or lean against these things
like rats that scurry on inside
the structure building brings.

The words "cry behind" brought an unexpected, yet perfect, visual image of a partition and the need to be separated.

I'm willing to bet you're a Harley guy, aren't you? I've heard similar sentiments expressed about 'cages'... although not as well.

Strange yet interesting and perfectly valid images.

Good work!

The first thing that comes to mind when I read this is good fences make good neighbors! There are two perspectives here. It depends on whether you're shutting yourself in or shutting the world out.

I busy my day holding them up.
Don't think I've ever read an ode to walls before, and this one pretty much covered it.

Hey Bub, nah, not really, I'm in my own form of enclosure truth be told.

Hey Noah, you just summed up my entire existence in your first 3 words.

Yes Shirley, that is part of it.

RCH, this was a great poem to read. I think most people went the metaphoric route but you did so well with a little reality. I liked the flow and the many uses you skillfully placed within the poem. Great work thank you for sharing!

Bob,
Your words have managed to encompass almost all reasons we might have, to be in contact with any walls. Both the physical or just simply those barriers we encounter, through our lifetime journey.
A vivid Poetry Prompt......
Best wishes, Eileen
