Juked

Remembering that day I zigged and zagged
across the lawn beside our old high school,
my supple lanky frame was brightly flagged,
the teacher said “No tackles, that’s the rule!”
I knew avoiding contact was the key
a subject I had just begun to plumb,
evade another’s touch and I was free
back then it felt so good, but now I’m numb.
Despite my score I quickly sought the bench
and lack of stimulation soon decreased
tactility to quite a large degree,
it’s funny how one wistful thought can wrench
you back to where your true potential ceased—
does independence justify the fee?
