Roses in the Park

Dedicated to John Lennon on the 25th anniversary of his untimely death.

We gathered speechless in the growing dark
remembering the brilliance of his light
and left our rosy sorrow in the park.

As one of four he made a lasting mark
which cruelly found his heart that fateful night;
we listened speechless in the growing dark

and prayed the news report was just a lark,
for who would ever… but no, it was right;
we lost our rosy visions. In that park

so named for berried plains, the truth is stark
that being human should bring great delight,
not speechless mourning in the growing dark;

commemorate the magic of his spark
and offer love to all within your sight.
The scent of rosy tributes in the park

imbue the air with their resigned remark,
imagine his disdain for this sad rite.
We gather speechless in the growing dark,
and leave our rosy visions in the park.

One that will surely be remembered. Beauty and brilliance do not always survive they just hand around refusing to be forgotten.

I have to add that of all the tributes throughout the day yours is right up there with the best and as always is filled with honest incite. The truth is indeed stark but the truth nonetheless.

A wonderful and somber poem. I think the most striking line to me is "imagine his disdain for this sad rite". Congratz on being a top 8, Good luck and I hope you are selected.

The only positive thing about Lennon’s death was its impact, how it elevated him from musical icon to world-wide symbol of peace.

This was (and still is) a more profound influence on world peace than any song he could have written or concert he could have given.

(As witnessed in your poem)

I so love this poem. I adore John Lennon and this poem really hits home. I love the repetition of "we gather speechless in the growing dark". Very effective. It must have been amazing to be right there - this poem took me there, too. Thank you. Beautifully written and powerfully remembered.

A well deserving honor. Mr. Lennon continues to touch us and more than his ideas and words living on I think that he would get off on the fact that he inspires the creation of new art on a daily basis in global places.

Cheers,
