Trait

I often look back to discern why I write
and I remember my Mom telling me
“You can be whatever you want to be,
have you written anything new today?”
which prompted me (with the utmost delight)
to share with her what I had to say.

And now whenever I jot down a line
I can feel her palpable presence there
and despite the undeniable despair
her gentle spirit’s loving touch
imbues my somewhat rigid design
with the caring soul we loved so much.

I'm past the half century mark and did not begin sharing my writing until after my mother had passed, but her everlasting support is present daily, and the gentle nudge that encourages me to keeping moving forward, on and off the written page. I enjoyed your poem immensely.

Thanks Shirley and RI. I started this almost 3 years ago, right after she passed, but couldn't finish it without some time going by to ease the ache a bit. Take care my friends :)
