I loathe the type that won't
desist their boastful blare
but know one thing they don't:
how little I could care
to those who get upset:
forego your fearsome glare
and never do forget
how little I could care.

Standings
I know the time is nearing
but blissfully play games
there's not much point in fearing
a god's almighty aims
it's futile to try fighting
the less than holy end
our means are expediting
and when it does descend
I hope my lack of trying
doesn't knock me out of place
or hinder qualifying
for His redemptive grace.

At times it seems there's nothing worse
than when your strategy goes south
but I'm prepared to hit reverse
if my foot invades my mouth.

Motivation.
Attack aggressively
and sometimes you will see
though bruised and sore
your foe will roar
and fight back more ferociously
so plan offenses well
and never waste a shell
the walls you storm
in fiendish form
could trap your troops in hell

Free Ride
Age may be a number
but I'm starting to relate
to the digits that must lumber
down the sidewalk, through the gate
on the day when I will slumber
and finally be sedate
where nothing can encumber
what the void will liberate.

Spirit
The present can look pretty from the wrapping that's applied
the contents can sometimes be less so
regardless how you gild it, if there's emptiness inside
the future's bleak; give love to all you know.
***Best of the season to anyone who reads this, regardless what you celebrate do it with people that matter to you and enjoy!***

Exception
Some thrive on rules
I think they're for fools
but then I've always been
apart from other men
except for this eve
when I truly believe
we all are one
Merry Christmas, I'm done.

Corrupt Code
This culture of denial
will only last a while
and at this rate it shouldn't be too long
we're breeding heartless killers
who love to topple pillars
for they were never told when they were wrong
we give them medication
a cut rate education
and graphic games where murder is condoned
then stand there unbelieving
while someone else is grieving
the hapless victim slain when they were stoned.

What the Flock
There are geese on the water
There are geese in the air
just take yourself a gander
there are geese everywhere
they're waddling across the rocks
that line the river's shore
and I don't really give a honk
if I see any more.

New Phase
Oh shadowy orb with rim afire
avatar of my desire
your iridescent charms ignite
renewed reflections on delight
an item too abstract to find
a feeling only in the mind
and though I can accept the truth
I often think of distant youth
when all I ever did was smile
oblivious to vicious vile
evil vermin of our race
that jeopardize our chance for grace
while way out there in space
that wandering vassal of the night
eludes the rising solar pyre

Those boxes of books?
Still unread
Those questioning looks?
In my head
That moment of glee?
Gone too soon

Return Fire!
There are those on this earth
allergic to mirth
convinced they know another's worth
but don't let them mar
your day or scar
you, remind them what a jerk they are.

Divisible
The lushness of the lowlands has been slowly stripped away
as naked mothers comb the mist for children gone astray
the river's cold and sluggish as it crawls between the hills
but here on holy ground I seek relief for all my ills
and though I must admit that the horizon starts to fade
a fraction of my fervor keeps me somewhat unafraid.

Hard Place
Who am I to judge
if you maintain a grudge
I've had my share of feuds
where I refused to budge
but here's a little hint
life's a lonely stint
for anyone who broods
their heart as hard as flint.

Avoidance
I'm seldom in the mood
when I initially wake
for reality to intrude
but it seems I cannot shake
the duties I've accrued
was it all a big mistake?
I'm feeling slightly rude
steer clear for your own sake.

Get My Drift?
We know the plows go by
when snow accumulates
but can you educate me why
the driver always waits
until my driveway 's clear
to push a glacier through
as they smile ear to ear
and bury us anew?
Well I have had enough this time
and vowed to pay them back
it's just their job, not a crime
but I said no more slack
so I borrowed a dump truck
and filled it with snow
then followed that dumb schmuck
to his house and let go!

Let it Rain
The clouds are coalescing
their misty forms
precursor storms
which sometimes are a blessing
for lands that need hydration
where fields have burned
and things have turned
into a conflagration.

Lockout
The moon drew nearer as I combed my hair
and skies for signs but none were there
and while I straightened out my part
it pulled on my entangled heart
which snarled into a painful knot
that deeply bothered me, but not
as much as staring at the breach
that keeps desire beyond my reach.

Toll or Tally?
It's critical to measure
like when you have to bake
but not always a pleasure
like how much one can take
of petty people prying
or those that try to break
your will with pointless lying
because they're so damn fake
or how long one can suffer
with guilt they cannot shake
instead of times they buffer
another person's ache.

Nonstop
December air is deceptively crisp
and yields a sky without a wisp
so you can watch the jets progress
as lines of white that coalesce
like magic in the blue expanse
and fade as fast as they advance
the same as we, the builders of
these steely steeds that streak above.

What have we gained from all of our clashes
an ocean of blood that's covered with ashes
and how do we shine despite dark desires
by borrowing light from elysian fires
when inspiration arrives in flashes
to anyone who aspires

We are all of us in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars- The Pretenders
Boundaries have been
the bane of good men
since our antecedents first breathed
they learned to break through
and try something new
when their curiosity seethed
we currently face
a chance to embrace
redemption for any past scars
but some cling to rage
while others engage
in a mission to visit new stars.

defies the cold

and will not fold
as drifts adorn.

can never be polluted
by toxic seepage from the world of woe
keep everything organic

whatever you may sow will surely grow.

Undergrowth
A crow inspects a garbage bin
it's darting eyes as black as sin
but finds no decent fare within
then soars above the brown decay
where I could swear just yesterday
the hill was lush and green and gay
beneath a sky so blue and vast
our problems never seemed to last
but sadly, that was in the past.

Solid?
The pond has icy skin
but no one dares to skate
it's far too frail and thin
and will not tolerate
the slightest bit of weight
just wait a few more weeks
until you know it's set
the wind will sting your cheeks
but you won't get wet
and glide without regret.

Blowing (Up)
I watch my neighbor try to blow wet leaves
through the fence he had erected
like trying to stuff big hairy legs in sleeves
they simply get rejected
and I laugh at the ironic web life weaves
but he looks less collected

I've been a bit too distracted
just doing the things I must do
with prepping and cleaning
and crazy careening
to possibly pen a protracted
attempt at prose for you
but today I've had time to ponder
between each unshakable task
and moments for jotting
or playfully plotting
the thoughts of a mind prone to wander
in search of new questions to ask.

It started as summer was ending
a duty we couldn't defer
contorted, but never done bending
we keep going back to the stir
to comfort a child convicted
of breaking the law of the few
and suffering what was inflicted
by lying enforcers in blue.

remembering to keep it short
we all have other things we'd rather do.

Preventive measures never ranked that high
upon the list of things I had to do
we can't forestall the fact that we will die

and with this in mind I'm making a vow

once high
she will lie

even die.

Greener Pastures
Shadows swoop across the fields
as clouds go drifting by
the endless wonder nature wields
is pleasing to the eye
the golden patch where men have sown
is interlaced with green
and, from where I stand, alone
it's achingly serene.

Doldrums
Distorted moaning laughter howls
outside my window pane
the mid-november skyline scowls
with swirling gray disdain
the bony trees with wrinkled skin
are now completely bare
and clatter, so withdrawn and thin
like skeletons everywhere
this tired year is almost through
it's slowing to a crawl
I long for brilliant skies of blue
as snow begins to fall.

Oh Yeah!
In a land without labels
how would you be hailed
and would innuendos
still be thinly veiled
and heated exchanges
or pitiful shame
might never exist
for we'd all be the same
identical, yes...
that's the way we should be
so perfectly programmed
there's no flaw to see
and if we get lucky
we won't have to think
I hope you like kool-aid
the national drink.

the same way, how bout you?

to make arrears

if you shatter every promise
were you wrong to have pledged?

Molting
A crooked line of geese flaps by
and undulates across the sky
as though a snake had learned to fly
exploring wispy curls of gray
that pass for clouds this autumn day
while winter surely heads our way
if only I could somehow wake
and levitate just like that snake
oh what a grand escape I'd make
beyond the land of living dead
where I can shuck this shameful dread
a mottled skin that must be shed.

The moon is tangled in some branches

inciting every hair to stand
upon my nape
as I stand there agape.

Cob Job
Look at you old man, they've shorn away your ears
as you stand gaunt and crooked midst the remnants of your peers
a weary husk too withered to be healed by shedding tears
yet unapologetic for the furrow that you walked
refusing to be swayed when someone favorably talked
a victim of the soulless scythe by which we all are stalked.

We were so inured to waste
we couldn't even see
or hear or touch or taste
the end that had to be
and now it darkly looms
the doors will soon be closed
belief in bullshit dooms
despite the plot proposed.

Off Screen
We're all so connected
we've grown out of touch
our duties neglected
distracted too much
far from perfected
but thinking we're such
the plan we've selected
a crumbling crutch.

Have Fun
I heard the news today and laughed
it seems the giant was just a jerk
who now is under staffed
I guess he might have to do some work.

Fallen
The monster moans a long metallic sigh
as mournful as a mother's last goodbye
that leaves befuddled siblings asking why
a single purple flower can't delay
November which is only days away
as I remember you and calmly pray
that all your inner demons finally cease
tormenting you which turns into release--
redemption helped you find eternal peace

that leaves befuddled siblings asking why

Nice Knowing You
Embarrass a man
you're witty and clever

you're banished forever.

Forced
The autumn wind blows long and chill
the colored leaves are sparse
I thoroughly distrust my will
as no more than a farce
a laughable production staged
by one who knows his role
and tries to keep the world engaged
but acting takes its toll.

Run Forest!
They try to make us think our place
is far below their state of grace
these criminals in classy suits
will dangle yummy seeming fruits
that those with blind ambitions chase
as single-minded as a bee
in search of pollen rich and free
compelled to ever swoop and dive
and die in service to the hive,
remember -- just avoid that tree!

Rallied
The ravenous clouds inhaled the sky
and no one seemed to care but I
quite satisfied to simply sit
upon the earth and not get bit
when suddenly the sun came out
dispersing them, oh what a rout!

Straggler
The leaves were like golden confetti
that twirled through the October air
and then someone dressed as a yeti
gave me a sizable scare
I watched all the clowns and the heroes
take part in the yearly parade
and then using singles and zeros
my favorite distraction was played
the colors are slowly receding
and limbs have begun to sag
denial is noted for breeding
a loser that's likely to lag.

Looking for a Win
If my roof didn't leak
it wouldn't rain much
turn my other cheek
and I get struck
I know it's bleak
but it's always been such
now I pray for a streak
where life won't suck.

Staying vs Walking
My dog will perceptibly flinch
when I have a leash in my hand
but suddenly grows by an inch
and struts around so grand
once I undo the cinch
it seems in a way we're all chained
by choices we cannot undo
despite whatever might be gained
there's one thing that's constantly true:
no one likes being restrained.

Cut!
The puppeteers believe they're kings
and sneer with every glance
for when they twang discordant strings
the whiny weaklings dance
they set the stage so every show
will profit them alone
employing props that never know
their lives are not their own
refuse to bow before these fools
release yourselves my friends
redeem your souls, you are not tools
it's time this madness ends!

Why can't life remain like this
with no major worries at all
instead we barter off our bliss
just for a chance to fall
to plummet through the atmosphere
attracted by the mass
of objects that we get too near
and oftentimes should pass.

Standouts
Although the copse is relatively bare
there's one defiant tree with leaves to spare
that look as red as rubies to my eye
and my only explanation as to why
is some will face the end halfheartedly
while others struggle on flamboyantly.

Midlife
I'm old enough to know better
but young enough to try
a slightly reserved go-getter
an expert on how to deny
bemused by my constant estrangement
bereft of beliefs to condone
accepting the awkward arrangement
not really aloof, just alone.

Getting It?
The older I get
the stiffer I am
but don't snicker yet
the joke is a scam
it means I can't move
and therefore my thrust
is not towards the groove
it's lampooning lust.

It's a cinch to be discreet
on a one-way street
your back should be towards
anyone you may meet
but if you're on display
or start to ricochet
off Chevys and Fords
you've gone the wrong way.

Amber
Suspended by the sweetness of a syrupy embrace
another victim finds itself forever stuck in place
unable to break free from the unrelenting grip
that captivates the innocent, drip by fatal drip.

Rustled
The birches brim with finches
that flit from branch to branch
my increments are inches
but I steadily advance
a single leaf is falling
and dreamily descends
a signal to stop stalling
as summer finally ends.

Looks can be Deceiving
I hide my heart behind a hardened scowl
to counteract it's tender tendencies
for there are many predators that prowl
in search of easy prey with flimsy knees
whose gutting (for the moment) will appease
the biting pangs of greed that tend to growl
within the guts of those with the disease
that makes them act deplorable and foul.
So when they see me glower from afar
they keep a healthy distance out of reach
and I conduct my business purposefully
but once I'm in the safety of my car
I pray (and here I do not mean to preach)
to thank The Lord I didn't have to flee.

We nurture the aggressive side
then gasp if they break bone
perhaps when there's a crimson tide
they'll say the call was blown.

Representative
"It's not an outbreak." the bureaucrat said on TV
"Just a single case." eyes darting furtively
"It's being handled here." he stammered subdued
then spun on his heel as cameras pursued.
"Begin evacuation" he muttered to his aide
"Of anyone required when decisions must be made
we wouldn't want the whining types to claim we went too far."
And then his burly bodyguard helped put him in the car
which sped away to take him to
a secret hideout known by few
so those that mattered could decide what to do
with any survivors if there even are.

Out of Shape
They'll sculpt your eyes with laser beams
and tighten skin with hidden seams
then dye your hair whatever hue
you're told creates the hippest you
our legends say we come from clay
and I'm inclined to think that way
as molding of one's chosen form
becomes the new conformance norm.

Good Morning America
What day would you pick to die
and who would you ask to sit there by
the bed (if that is where you'd choose to cease
existing and seek promised peace)?
just swallow that indigo pill
the final demise of your will.

Bully for Me
I should've seen back then
it wasn't all that bad
but no one's that insightful when
they're just a lass or lad
and now what hurts the most
as vision starts to dim
is knowing (not that I would boast)
I could've beaten him.

Ups and Downs
I watched a monarch's descent
marooned among the crass
unable to repent
for it was quite convinced
that it had too much class
and inwardly I winced
but then in its haphazard way
it swooped and rose again
to flit beyond the walls of gray
and rule the endless blue
while I (adjacent to the pen)
regret I never flew.

Boob Tube
I'm feeling a bit too logical today
perhaps I should watch TV
and see what all the 'experts' say
is possibly wrong with me
of course the list is long and broad
according to the View
for as a man I'm plainly flawed
at least that's what they spew
It seems the time has finally come
to go and find a cave
and leave behind the shrewish hum
the media mavens rave
there should only ever be one path
we follow if we can
it's common sense, not pointless wrath
against a hapless man.

Defrocked
I place more value on honesty
than anything made out of gold
and offer the ethical amnesty
from those that would withhold
it's such a tragic travesty
when posers start to scold
disciples of the ministry
that propagates their fold.

I could give a clinic
on how to be a cynic
but no one would be worthy of the fee
for they would fail to listen
as glazing pupils glisten
appalled by all my negativity.

Roadwork
Every intersection seems to be another stop
another interruption in the still unfolding flop
that no one will remember and I'd as soon forget
but each new holdup indicates it isn't over yet.

The musty smell as leaves decay
has rustled up a thought today
that helps dispel this damn dismay:
whatever clout you think you've got
is meaningless within the plot
we're all susceptible to rot.

Prickly
Majestic maples crowned in gold
with robes of bright vermillion
are truly regal to behold
and rule the Fall Cotillion
the sumacs in the retinue
are flushed from the excitement
while all the pines are green but who
will question their indictment

It's comical how corporate clowns keep coining phrases meant
to misdirect attention away from their intent
they juggle and they gesture that their greed is truly spent
while fleecing every person that wanders neath the tent

Exercising
Some dreams are ever ethereal
but they fortify the soul
their merit immaterial
without them we're not whole
while certain hopes are viable
if they're pursued with heart
no path is more reliable
than working from the start
for practice is a discipline
that perfect passion drives
progressing in this world we're in
is how our chance survives.

The pluses of pity are plain
to those that would harbor a grudge
but that doesn't mean they abstain
belligerent boors seldom budge
unless (of course) they are exposed
for then they will simply deny
that their little minds have been closed
while shamelessly shrieking the lie.

you could get nailed for being cross.

A bee is buzzing over
the autumn crowns of clover
a busy little rover
it scours every flower
for pollen to devour
despite the dying hour
and covets every kernel
though freedom is supernal
the hive must be eternal.

Spiral
And thus the fall began
with pouring rain at dawn
a lagging sun so wan
left shadows on the lawn
the leaves abruptly turned
and thus the fall began
as summer was adjourned
it flourished for a span
adhering to the plan
The Architect designed
and thus the fall began
with winter close behind
to ultimately kill
the sinful age of man
we ate our fruity fill
and thus, The Fall began.

Undaunted
Will anyone know I existed?
I pondered this morning out loud
despite any virtues enlisted
I haven't out distanced the crowd
and sometimes unwisely resisted
attempts at removing my shroud
but still raise my hands double fisted
I've always been me and I'm proud!

to permeate and motivate
someone down to rise above
their fate? Perhaps the path of love.

but soon the giant will find out
he's handed off the reins
to someone who would rather flout
instead of making gains.

Fledgling
The fragility of innocence
cannot be spared by diligence
or cushioned from the coming blows
by any doe-eyed diffidence
for soon we face the precipice
the drop-off of our purest bliss
where we confront a world of woes
and such destructive avarice
that either we become so jaded
any hope for love's degraded
or, we pray some savior shows
before our will has faded.

and so I'm shedding weight
as I regurgitate
the lies that left me hollow
despite how much I ate.

New Chapter
It seems that the story (as they sometimes do)
has plenty of drama to spawn a Part Two
the Kingdom continues (as well as it can)
relying upon an improbable plan
requiring teamwork (as sparse as it is)
to make sure the giant regains what was his
so he can toss scraps (as he did before)
and everyone feels just a little less poor
except for one peon (as dumb as devout)
who didn't foresee that he'd be written out.

Monstrous
The vultures ventured towards
the craggy frothy fjords
to gorge upon the sacrificial feast
a young and fetching maiden
appropriately laden
with chains securely fastened by a priest.
The sky was dark and gloomy
as prophets promised doom, "We
all shall face a judgment for our sins!"
And when the world was shaken
no one was mistaken
to think that this is how the end begins.
But through the cloudy cover
appeared her frenzied lover
upon a beast with bat-like wings that shrieked
he spied her on the altar
and shouted, "Do not falter!"
while she just stood there shaking, terror piqued.
Then suddenly the ocean
completely ceased all motion
as tension fairly crackled in the air
and then a gross leviathan
as massive as a thousand men
burst forth and spray exploded everywhere.
It's tusks were long and jagged
with oily scales and ragged
strands of seaweed hanging all about
it spied the Virgin offer
and oriented towards her
malevolence in mind without a doubt.
Her champion was ready
and told his steed "Be steady!"
descending to commence his first attack,
he bore a lance of silver
from the goddess of the river
enchanted to destroy this maniac.
The battle was ferocious
and wounds that were atrocious
were suffered by both parties in the fight
their blood began to mingle
and there was not one single
person unaffected by the sight
which made the crowd more willing
to see a proper killing
and they robustly cheered the hero on
who wasn't quite as battered
as armor sorely tattered
that earlier he had had the sense to don.
The injured hulk was slowing
an opening was showing
and then the suitor thrust with all he had,
his lance (which was embedded)
struck true, and thus the dreaded
creature died and everyone was glad
except for its intended
victim who extended
her arms towards the bloody mess and screamed
"Why were you so zealous?
You were only used to make him jealous!"
And he said, "Well, that wasn't what it seemed."

Roll me into foil
I will not recoil
or crack enough to break
as I can be a flake
twist me into wire
a pendant of desire
that gilds your ample breast
where I have longed to rest.

Hotheads
Who doesn't like a roaring blaze
to warm them on those brisker days
that is, until it starts to raze
the planks required for spanning
the constant rifts that seem to form
between yourself and the swarm
so next time you would like it warm
perhaps some proper planning
might help you save yourself some woe
by sparing bridges set to blow
then you can have a place to go
when stranded folk are fanning.
to warm them on those brisker days
that is, until it starts to raze
the planks required for spanning
the constant rifts that seem to form
between yourself and the swarm
so next time you would like it warm
perhaps some proper planning
might help you save yourself some woe
by sparing bridges set to blow

Breakthrough
Some things are good paper-thin
but toilet tissue? Not so much
for it could lead to problems (grin)
though that's a subject I won't touch.

As Intended
Since it was global Forgiveness Day
he muttered "What the hey"
and made the call he'd stalled for many years
but when he did get through
his anguish only grew
which prompted him to spill remorseful tears
for someone there replied
that his mother had quietly died
of cancer just about a year ago
she never let anyone in
on the fact that she had kin
and that was why they didn't let him know.
He whimpered as he heard
where she had been interred
then went there to at least pay some respect
he kneeled before her grave
and then began to cave
ashamed of irresponsible neglect
but as he loudly sobbed
the air around him throbbed
with energy that made his hair stand straight
and suddenly he knew
that she was coming through
with something very poignant to relate
"My Son" he heard her say
"I'm glad you came today
for now my weary spirit can move on
I'm leaving to be free
as you must also be
I love you!" And with that her soul was gone.
He rose with a sigh
and whispered "Goodbye,
may peace be yours forever mother dear."
Forgiveness had begun
for his failings as a son
and useless guilt began to disappear.

Designated Drivel
I don't have the lips
to be qualified
the dejected quips
diplomacy aside
it's no longer about
a talented line
as long as you spout
the milquetoast whine.

Heritage
My Grandma whispers in my ear
"Here's a poem for you."
and then my Mother loud and clear
"To yourself be true!"
I miss them both, but they're still here
with every line I write
their graceful strength to persevere
the source of my delight.

Space Time
I raved like a lunatic
the silver siren made me sick
with passion that could not be quelled
though she would not be held
the same old boring shtick
but then she pulled me closer till
I was doomed to lose my will
as her celestial beauty waxed
and my reserves were sorely taxed
but I refused her still.

Reassessment
The dew is shining in the grass
cicadas hail me as I pass
the woe of one condemned to die
apparent on the path I ply
but once the brilliant morning sun
caresses me such thoughts are done
and I am resolutely glad
for everything, both good and bad
that I have been alive to feel
and thus I end my little spiel.

Downstream
Some of us swirl, some of us stir
some get deeper as they go
some have a force that no dam can deter
but all must succumb to the flow
of tumultuous time as it cascades
beyond the point that we can see
way past where our perception fades
for rivers must run free.

Critic
Just reading back through comments left
by pleasant people meaning well
and realize I feel bereft
of those I opted to repel
I don't know why I choose to be
alone the way I always am
it's hard enough accepting me
without the stress of giving a damn
but maybe there will be a time
when I can finally find the spot
where interactions aren't a crime
and I don't seek a plot.

Corrections
The walls that we erect
in order to incarcerate
can never quite protect
the innocent from feeling hate
once shuffled through the gate
on firmly shackled feet
to learn the ways of the sedate
conformance is concrete.

Tectonics
I feel the shift
a growing rift
as continental footings drift
and soon the sea
will pour with glee
into the strait methodically
until we stand
on separate land
more distant as our worlds expand.

The Walk
It hurts sometimes when I walk
but it's better than having to crawl
or having no legs at all
or constantly finding a reason to balk
because I can't handle the pain
I'm stronger than that when I try
despite being less and less spry
with each irrevocable grain.

who decides what is the same?
For measurements are

than what the dishonest will claim.

on opportunity.

imperfection free
no one need know
what's real or faux
everything's game
so shuck off your shame
the years can be shed
humility dead.

B Gone
Properly prostitute yourself
and you could win the favor of the throng
and a golden statue for your shelf
while you convince yourself they love your song
but you will be forgotten when they soon
find another reason to devote
their mindless admiration as they swoon
before the latest diva they promote.

Stalled
Now I know how it feels
to envy another man’s wheels
my car a motionless heap
as I clearly struggle to keep
myself moving forward these days
and though every step causes pain
I shall not stop moving again
whether legs comply or not
this drive to be is all I’ve got
despite inconvenient delays.

If being apart
entices the heart
what can be said
for those who instead
become so attached
no moment is snatched
without someone there
demanding you care
is that what they call
the chain or the ball?

Mass Appeal
The problem with pretentious prose?
It only will appeal to those
who are themselves extremely snide—
the bigger the word, the more you can hide
you needn’t be overtly plain
like water swirling down the drain
but never be so grandiose
that readers pray their death is close
just find a clever way to state
a truth to which we all relate
and maybe you’ll be fondly read
beyond the day you wind up dead.

Epic Fail
I showed you but you wouldn't heed
that nothing good is guaranteed
for those that try to play the part
but never learn right from the start
the knowledge it will truly take
to see the difference one can make
when measuring as under oath
the indices that foster growth.

Saving the Nave
Every desecration takes a toll
diminishing the structure as a whole
requiring a sermon to cajole
the callow congregation to attend
to steps on which the faithful must ascend
in order to assure a proper mend.

Fell Swoop
When we hear a songbird tweet
we sigh and think 'oh how sweet '
but today I saw one in the street
dismantling a roadkill treat
I know to live that many kill
but I don't think I ever will
feel tranquil when I hear that trill
in fact it could induce a chill.

Not Going Gently
I no longer sit and whine
about the death of every line
that briefly lives when posted on this site
I simply jot another one
a fighter's bout is never done
at least until they're facing that good night.

A bright red ball
is at the bottom of a waterfall
just twirling, twirling, twirling
that's all
and though I hear the call
of things no one can stall
I find myself falling, falling, falling
beneath it's thrall.

Expressionism
I wonder what they'd think
if they knew decades hence
that some would soak up all the ink
they labored to dispense
not with pen and paper leaf
but digital display
would it be beyond belief
I wonder what they'd say?
And how will those in future years
digest a poet's dream
can the mind be brought to tears
from a thought directed beam?

Filling
With gravity's aid
I easily made
a rapid descent for my lunch
so I could enjoy
that cute little boy
that I simply love such a bunch
we sit and we chat
while nibbling at
the courses we've chosen to munch
and I hope he's aware
I'll always be there
to help him whatever the crunch.

A woman has a way to sway
your mind with undulating hips
and plumped-up playful pouty lips

Undoing
I finally came to grips
and then it slipped right through my grasp
the balance ironically tips
as we grow tired from trying to clasp
a fragment of a fraction
of a miniscule amount
of so - called satisfaction
before our time runs out.

Fill In
I found myself slightly distraught
for I squandered a burgeoning thought
but once a replacement was sought
my mind automatically meshed
with fodder just recently threshed
and another creation was fleshed.

Baleful
We climbed into the loft
then jumped upon the mow
the hay was nice and soft
and tasty for a cow
the sweet summer smell
contained in every stalk
made youthful daring swell
till I saw fit to balk
and touched down with my knee
connected to my eye
it knocked the sense right out of me
a painful way to fly
and now when I recall that day
despite the years I've spanned
I know it's all about the way
you think before you land.

Insatiable
If we could eradicate unplanned birth
perhaps there'd be a chance for earth
but folks with feelings must bow to the fact
that they don't think, they simply act
so kiss your favorite spot farewell
our world will soon be just a shell
obliterated by a breed
that can't resist unbridled greed.

Some Race
Hurry, scurry little rat
to make it to your nest
and see if you can earn a pat
by passing every test
performing tasks the best
huffing, puffing rodent breath
is all they want to hear
within your spinning wheel of death
the rules are very clear
to which you must adhere.

he was cooler than before

Gratitude
I loathe being the same—
another germ beneath the scope
just waiting to be analyzed
and designated tame
by those that like to dangle hope
among the patronized
I long to be unique—
a lone explorer wading through
the all too placid main
of those innately meek
because they're programmed to pursue
compliancy most plain
I love to feel alive—
to breathe in deep the fresh sweet air
as new sensations sweep
compelling me to thrive
and give much thanks that I could share
this world before I sleep.

Reprogramming
The day they announced it I wasn't upset
just caught between pangs of relief and regret
I felt a bit sad they were closing the door
but glad that my sweat would be wasted no more
it's funny how change rearranges the scheme
allowing pursuit of the prodigal dream
as pillars of industry grind to a halt
artistic endeavors become the default.

Final Chapter
The giant's will buckled (as well as his knees)
for there was no cure to curtail the disease
consuming his kingdom (as maladies do)
relentlessly killing defenses too few
he moped in denial (as healthy flesh died)
his aging mind muddled by misinformed pride
and minus the fanfare (as nothing survived)
we mourned the demise of a land that once thrived.

Gridlock
Just waiting for the signal to advance
such is my unenviable stance
but then I check the rear view and I see
a line of those that also seek to be
allowed to find the fastest thoroughfare
that helps to quickly get them anywhere
other than the overcrowded lot
where those that idle jostle for a spot.

assails me with pointless platitudes
the pounding has started

attempt at one of my better moods.

for two cars to fit through

the only driver is you.

Exonerated
I knew a girl named Katiedid
who sought to change her name
she'd had enough to flip her lid
of always taking blame
whenever there was something wrong
her name came up you see
and she would have to sing the song
of please just let me be
but now she has devised at last
a handle less severe
and eyes that once accused look past
angelic Katie-dear.

Atmospheric
I watch the sky for bolts of lightning flashing in the east
that slice the dark like holy swords which crackle bluish-white
that some eternal champion would use to slay a beast
if it were here to sow destruction on this stormy night
and if I could I'd wrap my hands around the plasma hilt
then revel in the thunder as the monster's blood is spilt.

is there such a place?
As countless galaxies disperse

Surrendering before the show

Zealotry
The validity of a dream
is furthest from ones mind
as long as it might make it seem
that stars can be aligned
and destinies designed
The effort it takes to succeed
requires a fierceness inside
along with the courage to bleed
when lances are not put aside
or someone forsaken has cried.

He never loved a heart as much

he's richer by compare.

Improvement?
I chanced to spy a bird this morn
that seemed to mope as though forlorn
for all the lovely trees were shorn
by our neighbor in the back
and it was quite a harsh attack
I watched his workers saw and hack
away at the defenseless trunks
a heartless band of hired punks
that carted off the shattered chunks
while countless creatures hit the loam
evicted and compelled to roam
so someone could spruce up their home.

so someone could spruce up their home.

Insurmountable
Some bees are abuzz in a berry bush
beside my little stretch of beach
and I am lulled by the gentle push
of breezes till the seagulls screech
and then I sigh, a great big whoosh
some things are just too hard to breach.

Technoids
Our forefathers tried
but rapidly died
for flesh is quite fragile you know
until we began
to overtake Man
survival became touch-and-go
but logic prevailed
and breeding curtailed
until there were no humans born
then we chose to be
synthetically free
immune to the foibles of scorn
we live without debt
and banished regret
society runs like a clock
from chaos we built
a world without guilt
where nothing requires a lock
has passion been killed
or artistry stilled
by lack of a heart at the core?
I'm not fit to say
for I spend each day
repeating my program once more.

Jaded Squab
They cluster and drop
their runny white slop
and it's quite doubtful that they'll ever stop
Immune to the scowl
of a plasticized owl
the pigeons could care if we humans cry "Foul!"

Flutter
I heard a tapping at the window so looked outside and saw
a golden colored dragonfly whose wings had not one flaw
it hovered there majestically for just the briefest stint
then flew around emitting quite an iridescent glint
The next day as I sat there contemplating blissful sloth
my fantasy was shattered by an acrobatic moth
it's frenzied fuzzy body was the color of fresh cream
and after but a second it was gone as though a dream
Today I wonder what I'll see outside my office cell
that makes me wish that I possessed some wondrous wings as well
so I could navigate the skies with true impunity
and maybe feel for once in life that I am truly free.

Necessary Evil
It's the takers and the fakers
not the movers or the shakers
that make us long for lazy days
retired at Golden Acres
but most are not so lucky
we struggle (ain't life ducky?)
to justify a token raise
while trying to stay plucky.

I've never looked at things
the way that other people do
although I'm always careful
to understand their view
for everyone is certain
what they believe is true
and sometimes if I'm lucky
I learn something new.

Borderline
To be this close to my desire
is driving me insane
it's a good thing passions don't expire
though sometimes they can wane
if something one was meant to do
is pushed aside for duty's sake
how long before they must pursue
their fate regardless what's at stake?
The melody pulls me from the mire
it's like a splinter in my brain
to be this close to my desire
is driving me insane.

Where gravity's at
things tend to go splat
float gently with grace
you could be in space
until you fall flat
on your face.

The tree and I were one
where we eclipsed the sun
our shadows seemed to mesh
like inky phantom flesh
and though my vision swims
with dreams of many limbs
I know it isn't so
and simply let it go.

Chopped
The giant went swinging (as hard as he could)
the axe that he uses for clearing deadwood
and everyone shuddered (as rotten trees fell)
imagining they'd get a whacking as well
but sometimes one has to (as nature commands)
eliminate those that are crowding the lands
yet never give back to (as patriots do)
the kingdom, ensuring tomorrows ensue.

Loaf
If anything that I have said
makes sense to anyone anywhere
then I have earned my daily bread
and gladly offer up a share
it's crusty but it's decent fare
so take a nibble, go ahead
despite the fact there's no meat there
you should feel somewhat fed.

Realism
My way of living is up in the air
and though I could cry "It's not fair!"
I'm trying my best to prepare
for anytime fortunes can shift
before we head off for the rift
it's life that's the ultimate gift.

Is it better to be grounded

I'd rather feel amazed each day
than fight with fears unfounded.

Hate to Break it to You
You can't fix everything that's broke
or write on paper that turned to smoke
a shattered heart at times won't mend
without the love it would die to defend
so listen up and don't think it's a joke
you can't fix everything that's broke
when even prayers won't do the job
we can only hold them as they sob
and whisper assurances soothingly
while knowing there's no guarantee;
you can't fix everything that's broke
whether splintered spirit, bone or oak
and if the part can't be replaced
a hard decision must be faced,
remember well these words I spoke
you can't fix everything that's broke.

It's a hungry world out there
of ravenous despair
so always beware
or you could become the fare
that feeds the machine
a sheepish type bred extra lean
just carrion not haute cuisine
your bones picked clean.

Amendment
To find the freedom of which I dream
isn't as easy as it may seem
and though I am revolting
apparently my chance is bolting
to exercise the right to speak
because my constitution's weak;
you can't construct a nation
based on basic indignation
there's got to be a greater scheme
to find the freedom of which I dream.

Dosey-Doe
Beneath the glare of stars we try,
despite the endless night
through which we pirouette and fly,
relying on our partner's might
but if we just keep asking more
it could collapse, and very soon
and we will wind up looking for
another one - perhaps the moon?

Copout
Petty people hide
behind the laws they make
pompous fools compelled by pride
ridiculously fake
like badges made of tin
as trite as this small town
that criminals display and grin
as though they wear a crown
never dare to cross
the crooked in control
they'll lie then laugh about your loss
power takes its toll.

Avast
I delve into the voices of the past
when looking for a way to forge ahead
like climbing to the crow’s nest of a mast
to see if there are continents to tread
and often there’s a landing spot to find
exotic pleasures for the heart and mind.

I'm here at your table enjoying
the taste of my favorite treat
although you're supremely annoying
you make yourself easy to beat
Your kingdom was once a fair country
where people were happy to give
but now your incessant effrontery
makes natives seek elsewhere to live.

To Be Continued
Is there anything left to say
he wondered as he met the day
oppressed by shades of gray
that scrolled across the sky
like all the lines that rot and die
while he becomes less spry
but there were debts still owed
so he maintained productive mode
and on and on it flowed.

When Wembley met Matilda
In springtime when the flowers sprout
Encouraged by a gentle rain
All types of creatures venture out
To start the cycle once again
Beside a giant swaying elm
In which a tawny owl hoots
There lies the dank and loamy realm
Where Wembley Worm once put down roots.
Now Wembley wasn’t merely meek
He always trembled, downright shy
Avoiding not just Robin’s beak
But even every passerby
He’d burrow down beneath the tree
To shiver in the chilly ground
Alone with just his misery
Uncertain moans the only sound.
One day a friendly little gnat
Caught sight of Wembley in his hole
She buzzed, “Hi, please come out to chat.”
But Wembley shook beyond control
He dug down deeper in the dirt
Until he could no longer hear
That scratchy drone which didn’t hurt
But put a tickle in his ear.
Matilda was a thoughtful bug
And though it seemed a trifle strange
She felt an urge to give a hug
And help this gloomy worm to change.
The next day as she whizzed about
She made a point to softly land
Beside the spot where he would pout
To try and coax him from the sand
“Oh please forgive my brash advance
I know the world can be a scare
But if you give me one small chance
I’ll show you other people care
Come out; come out to see the sun
And drink the silver morning dew
Together we can have some fun
Before the day is finally through.”
As tempting as her offer was
Old Wembley still could not say yes
He hunkered down until her buzz
No longer made him curious.
Matilda flew home with a smile
She never backed down from a fight
She knew that it might take a while
But Wembley Worm would see the light.
The following day she came back
And took her place beside his door
Prepared to try a different tack
She cleared her throat to speak once more.
“I’m here again to voice my plea
Come look around my timid friend
If you don’t pop up once to see
You’ll always wonder in the end.”
Now this made Wembley start to think
Of course he didn’t want to hide,
While thinking he began to slink
Then suddenly, he was outside!
He blinked and rubbed his tiny eyes
Which quickly darted all around
He shuddered but to his surprise
There was no danger to be found.
“Hello, how are you bashful one?”
He heard a small voice kindly say
“My name’s Matilda, no don’t run,
I’m so glad you came out to play.
I know you’re scared, I would be too
But look, I think it’s plain to see
A worm as big and strong as you
Has naught to fear from little me.”
So in a slightly shaky tone
He said “My name is Wembley Worm
I live my life right here alone
Where everyday I fret and squirm
I’ve never had a friend before
But if you want, I’ll really try
Just don’t get mad if I’m a bore
I’m not the most exciting guy.”
At this, Matilda had to grin
She said “I’m sure you’ll be okay,
The day is young so let’s begin.”
And off she flew to lead the way.
“I have no legs for running fast
So please don’t get too far ahead
If I’m alone my nerve won’t last.”
A worried Wembley quickly said.
Together they began to search
For interesting sights to see
They climbed upon a fallen birch
To marvel at a bumblebee
Whose humming echoed through the air
A truly joyous kind of song
And Wembley couldn’t help but stare
Unsure why he had moped so long
The next stop was a narrow brook
That gurgled with a pleasant sound
The fish gave him a hungry look
Which prompted them to turn around
They ran into a fragrant bush
Where Wembley stopped to fill his nose
Matilda had to gently push
And say, “Come on, it’s just a rose.”
All over that small wooded glade
The two explored and talked and laughed
Until they saw the glimmer fade
From daylight’s final golden shaft.
Then Wembley turned to his new chum
A strange expression on his face
He tried to speak, no words would come
So he began to slowly pace
At last he said “You’ve given me
The greatest gift a friend could give
You showed me how good life can be
And also how to truly live.”
Matilda blushed without a peep
Then left as it was time for bed
But Wembley knew he couldn’t sleep
A million thoughts raced through his head
He sat there gazing at the sky
Reluctant to go back below
For now he knew the reason why
Sometimes you have to change to grow.

The lie has built
for quite a spell
so pick a shell
the shiesters sell
your trust will wilt
in debtor's hell.

Holding Fast
I shall not let you go
although you're chirping so
I refuse to be deprived of your sweet song
it helps me every morn
to deflect the coming scorn
from those who think that status makes them strong.

Spoilage
Before self-awareness condemns
our minds to a sentence of doubt
we savor the pleasure that stems
from people that jump when we pout
but some never seem to outgrow
the childish need to be seen
as center of all that we know
or else they turn horribly mean.

To Ply
My morning momentum will often inspire
my mind to create as connections refire
and I like to go (if you know what I mean)
by starting the day with a slate I wiped clean.

cannot be bought
it can't be lured

it can't be quelled
it's never cured
can't be dispelled
for it's not real
but hard as steel
and rest assured
it's worth a feel.

Heart of Gold
Nature is no miser
with the brightest of its shades
the sun could not be brighter
on the buttercup strewn glades
Her blue is vast and vibrant
Her green so rich and lush
when crimson hearts are strident
Her beauty bids them hush.

Accommodations
Last night I slept on air
despite incarceration
but woke to some despair
undeniable deflation
for bars were everywhere
and chances of probation
were thinner than that air
that once was my salvation
Tonight I'll sleep on stone
and revel in my hunger
more lonely than alone
a misbegotten blunder
and while I'm lying prone
I may start feeling younger
and stir the tempest in my bone
that rumbles low like thunder.

No Crap
I haven't cared for a long time
with little reason to
as long as I am paid my dime
there's motions I'll go through
but if you don't put down the hoop
and drop your whip right now
in order for you to ever poop
they'll have to remove those things somehow.

A raven was in the road
it’s head in swivel mode
looking for somewhere to peck
a victim flat as heck
but flew before it felt
another steely belt.

You fancy flesh
that yields to touch
so vibrant, fresh
and promising such
delight beneath the skin
You take a whiff
before you know
you're feeling stiff
and juices flow
from deep within
Contentments grow
in coveted lands
unless we sow
with our own hands
an orchard free from sin.

Retrospect
We make a map within our head
of where our path of life will lead
until we find the trail we tread
is nowhere near the place we thought
as promises and pride proceed
to keep our tether taut
preventing us from seeking out
that distant spot of which we dreamed
another bind, another bout
of unexpected stress and then
the road is shorter than it seemed
way back when.

Thorny
The sarcasm drips
right off your lips
like dew from a poisonous plant
which could be the root
of why people scoot
whenever you roll out a rant
right off your lips

If knowledge is the currency of the universe
there's one thing I can tell
I don't have to shake my purse
to know I'm broke as hell.

Rain Check
A blackbird walks with it's beak pointing down
and head gyrating side to side
as it highsteps through the rain-soaked grass
I could swear that bird is starting to frown
for all the worms have chosen to hide
until the hunter makes it's final pass.

Transferal
The giant grew nasty (as mean as a snake
that swallowed a hornytoad by mistake)
he struggled to make it (as all of us do)
lamenting the mountain of gold that he blew
and blaming each beastie (as broke as the next)
for being the reason that he was perplexed
while proof is quite plain (as the nose on his face)
that he is the cause of his current disgrace.

Beginning of the End
How can anyone with a brain
select such a person to lead
her lust for fame couldn't be more plain
a platform planked with greed
If you want America worse than now
then go and waste your vote
on the media's latest sacred cow
so another thief can gloat.

My dog digs dirty socks
and now his breath melts rocks
I toss him a bone
but he leaves it alone
I think he needs detox.

Dwarfed
I sit beside the quiet creek
and listen to the birds that speak
their minds in lilting melodies
as I inhale the fragrant breeze
and wonder shadowed by the cleft
how many days like this are left?

Lost Sheep
Matters are seldom as simple
as what we are led to believe
by those that should set the example
but only proceed to conceive
inventive ways to deceive
as ethics so easily crumple
and we are abandoned to grieve
destruction of the temple.

If one stuck a fish up their nose
would it be smelt?
What if they served it from their deck
would it be dealt?
And if they had the battered kind
would it look bruised?
Try munching on a clown fish
you might be amused.

Sacrificial
You'll never escape
the yoke on your nape
or brush off the need
to constantly scrape
The bane of your breed
is to service the greed
of elitists that rape
while you slowly bleed.

The wounded can never recoup
the blankness of flesh with no scar
but take yourself out of the loop
and soon they'll forget who you are.

As graceful wisps of cottonwood dance softly on the breeze
like little fluffy fairy sprites at play
I marvel at the emerald bounty waving in the trees
and thank our earthen mother for today
forgetting all the pompous fools that pen inane decrees
so I can just enjoy the grand ballet.

Flying Lessons
I watched a pigeon take a dip
it didn't even have to strip
and then it paused to take a sip
before continuing it's trip
across the sky to who knows where
oblivious to our despair
if only we could learn to share
it's knack for knowing when to care
instead of being so consumed
with petty slights that we've presumed
as pointless enmity has bloomed
within a breed that could be doomed.

Stashed
These structures lend me fortitude
a base on which to lean
and though at times it seems they're skewed
I try my best to keep lines clean
predictability aside
each construct helps me build
a fine retreat in which to hide
until the drive is stilled.

Remains
There's nothing we can do or say
to make the anguish go away
it feels that even time won't mend
the ache that seems to never end
when looking at the photographs
remembering the precious laughs
which only hurts your heart anew
for now their time on earth is through
but if you hold their memory dear
it's almost like they're still right here
a part of you down to the core
until you're in their arms once more.

Conflicted
Anxiously ambivalent
is how I spend each day
confused and sad that I have spent
my time in such a way
anxiously ambivalent
describes me to a tee
too uncertain to repent
and too removed to be.

our weaknesses remind us

we grope in desperation

reveals how close we be.

Vestiges
Just stroll beneath the trees in bloom
on a warm spring night in May
and you'll smell bittersweet perfume
as petals wilt away
their fullness is as fleeting
as the swollen silver moon
that dominates the sky above the grove
as cycles keep repeating
I long to furlough June
and save these precious pearls within my trove.

Craggy
What does it take to care
to vanquish your despair
and show you're there?
Where must one look to see
a way to truly be
among the we?
How can one start to feel
without a sappy spiel
and know it's real?
Why are some immune
to urges to commune
from what stone are they hewn?

These clarion blasts of clarity
are such a precious rarity
I share them with sincerity
despite the sheer hilarity
of one with the audacity
to simulate sagacity
with nothing but tenacity
and variable veracity.

it's much the same with folks
some can swim, some need a boat.

Tolerance
Why do those in power choose
to make their way 'obey or bruise'?
If only the elected could
perform their duties as they should
perhaps there'd be a lot less strife
and we could all get on with life
or am I being too naive
when I wholeheartedly believe
that our best course is to forgive
and simply let each other live
before we go beyond the line
and jeopardize the whole design.

It's a natural reaction
to raise above your head
your fists in satisfaction
when all your foes have fled
but don't get too elated
because the bad guys bled
you can be eliminated
unless they are instead.

So many ways to go
such little time to show
the route you think you know
could be deceiving
just give the brakes a tap
wherever there's a radar trap
and find not every map
is worth believing.

Knowing Best
'Remarkably unremarkable'
my father always said
'Remarkably unremarkable
that's life, then you're dead.'
'Remarkably unremarkable
so much of life the same,
remarkably unremarkable
that is, until you came.'
Remarkably unremarkable
I've learned to sing this hymn
life's been remarkably unremarkable
since the day we lost him.
***This isn't autobiographical, just sounded better in first person***

Salvageable
Momentos from the aftermath
including swirls of dredged-up wrath
displayed for all the world to see
preserved inside of you and me
as we continue down the path
of living and just letting be.
There's nothing anyone can say
there are no words that we can pray
to take away the awful pain
the image of each streaking plane
that pierced our innocence that day,
that chilled the blood in every vein
and overwhelmed each worn synapse
with fear when watching the collapse
of everything that we believe,
the selfless heroes we now grieve
whose sacrifices taught perhaps
there's hope for what we might achieve.

the next unneeded scandal.

The blackbird told the squirrel
"I wish I had your curl."
"But then you couldn't fly."

"Though if I had your beak
I'd look rather sleek."
"But then you couldn't gnaw."
she tweeted, "So pshaw!"

Tall Order
To ride upon a strand of silk
that wafts along a gentle breeze
may help one circumvent the ilk
that grovel on their battered knees
positioning oneself astride
this insubstantial steed
and finding wind enough to glide
is needed to be freed
but it's not such an easy task
for I have never found
a spider big enough to ask
or a zephyr that profound.

for everyone's fatally flawed

Seeing Through
The brilliant sun (so lofty)
is calling to me softly
just beyond the fringes of my pane
and where it's golden fingers
have touched me, warmness lingers
which makes all other comfort seem in vain
but this is not permitted
and thus I am committed
to staying in this cube where I remain
my wanderlust apparent
and thin facade transparent
as photons telling me to shed the rein.

we're planning our next deed
and we proceed.

In the Dumps
Your dwelling will likely turn drab
and be in some need of repairs
if you never once hazzard a stab
at fixing those rickety stairs
or scraping the flaky facade,
your dwelling will likely turn drab
with weeds poking out of the sod
and fringing each sidewalk slab.
Unless you're willing to dab
some paint, you better just rent
your dwelling will likely turn drab
and you'll have more woes to repent
that fester inside of your mind
like maggots that gnaw on a scab
and you will undoubtedly find
your dwelling will likely turn drab.

Choice Words
For every is there's a was
though dos don't always foster does
and every will meets a won't
where every didn't isn't a don't.
Resist saying "I have to do it."
just do it and say "It's done!"
Your plan, if you pursue it
may flourish once begun.

awash in hope as Spring arrives
ambivalence as well survives
a mix of pining and relief
that April (much like life) is brief.

Institutionalized
The poet that adores their pen
may be somewhat startled when
there's no one left beyond the laws
or reasons to pursue the cause
except for that intense release
of every sentence, every piece.
Can there be an apt defense
against the lack of common sense?
remember when they cried "Convict!"
and how you felt your lungs constrict
despite this urge you now deplore
to be locked up for evermore.

Willies
The night was dark and subdued
I felt I was being pursued
but I couldn't tell
if my tail meant well
or if it should be eschewed
Resisting the urge to retreat
in fear was no easy feat
my nerves were so frayed
I shook as I prayed
my shadow and I wouldn't meet
I heard the snap of a twig
my squinting eyes grew big
and then I jumped
as my heart thumped
it's own alarming jig
that was all that it took
I stood for a second and shook
and then I ran
like a crazy man
afraid to even look
I made it to my lawn's sweet blades
flew inside, pulled the shades
and started to intone
a vow to never walk alone
through those dark and daunting glades.

Value
It's more about the code to which we adhere
in regards to the matter of worth
than any possession we hold dear
while doing our time on this earth
in regards to the matter of worth
we can pile our toys to the sky
while doing our time on this earth
but even the wealthiest die
we can pile our toys to the sky
like altars to honor our greed
but even the wealthiest die
consumed in the end by their need
like altars to honor their greed
the shiny possessions held dear
consumed in the end by our need
the code to which we adhere.

Universal
Life is life
or so they say
but are we truly alive,
are constant strife
and those who prey
prerequisites to survive?
Across the vast
and silent night
is everything the same
are races past
and poems they write
all part of one big game
an endless test
to grow and learn
what everyone should know
to try our best
and always yearn
for peace before we go.

No Release
I try to stay young
but my latest rung
is starting to bring me down
my ambitions are small
yet constantly stall
which spawns a perpetual frown
I'm casting my lines
while nature designs
some deepening grooves of her own
but no point in tears
for none of those years
can ever be sportingly thrown.

Rudimentary
How long can we maintain a crumbling bluff
aware that more erosion will ensue,
how long before we sigh and say "Enough,
I'm leaving now, my efforts here are through."
It only takes one unpredicted storm
to weaken structures that were once robust
a violent heave to drastically deform
the clay that all too soon returns to dust.
Endeavor to construct cohesive bonds
regardless of your ultimate pursuit
for this is where we find the most support,
a blooming rose may have resplendent fronds
but needs a sturdy well established root
or else it's fleeting flourish will be short.

aware that more erosion will ensue,
how long before we sigh and say "Enough,
I'm leaving now, my efforts here are through."
It only takes one unpredicted storm
to weaken structures that were once robust
a violent heave to drastically deform
the clay that all too soon returns to dust.
Endeavor to construct cohesive bonds
regardless of your ultimate pursuit
for this is where we find the most support,
a blooming rose may have resplendent fronds
but needs a sturdy well established root
or else it's fleeting flourish will be short.

How quickly buds appear
when the sun returns each year
from it's protracted stay
so far away from here
but as the daylight dims
the creaky moan of weathered limbs
reveals the frigid way
of winter whims.

A hundredth of a million
may not seem like much to some
but to many it would be a precious gift
for each unneeded billion
earned through pampered tedium
there's someone barely making it on shift
If one in a hundred makes a stand
perhaps a change will sweep this land
existence being equalized
for families they've fractionalized.

the right to pass
their only perk.

Machinations
You can hear that monster wailing
by the river to the south
with smoky tendrils trailing
as they issue from its mouth
the early morning sun's reflected
off its gleaming hide
denied to those protected
as they're taken for a ride
There are no knights or wizards
to slay this chugging beast
which gorges on our gizzards
as we blindly fuel the feast.

Lent
What's it like to build a house
and be the first one in
or drive a car that's so brand new
the wheels have yet to spin?
I wouldn't know, I've never made
a profit off my sin
existing on the hand-me-downs
of those that do and grin
increasing their possessions
when penance should begin.

I need another hit
to nail the boss's chin
way too hooked to ever quit
who will really win?
Those that write the code
are calling all the shots
but I don't care how much is owed
my stomach tied in knots.

commodities will grow

remember to conserve

security's a sham
and will expose your scam

a scar is all you'll reap

sow too soon
and you won't have to prune

It's waving in the wind
on stalks of golden brown
rising up triumphantly,
and prized upon the floor
by those that like to walk
all over it,
sometimes it's but a tick
that tumbles much too fast
within a glassy cell,
and often it gets rubbed
by those that always choose
to go the other way.

Furrows
We were borne
through fields of corn
by tan but tender feet
three young boys
just making noise
and eager to compete
we would run
just for fun
and sometimes we would race
but no one cared
how they fared
for we were in our place
our country home
where fertile loam
and gnarly limbs of wood
could nurture us
without much fuss
we really had it good
till roots were torn
and ties were shorn
and we were forced to move
from innocence
to indigence
an age inducing groove.

At times I'm too subjective
distorting the perspective
but all I've ever sought to do
is share my own distinctive view
with every composition
The canvas can be greedy
the medium too needy
absorbing every single dot
the cursed exhibit as they plot
a way to reach fruition.

Children bring us endless joys
except for when they choose
to stomp around in angry little rants
but if you can't handle it with poise
and be their win or lose
then keep it firmly packaged in your pants.

Baby tone it down
you're so bedecked in bling
you look like you might drown
in a sea of shiny things
outlandish doesn't even start
to possibly convey
the spectacle as you depart
and all your bangles sway
your fashion is a failure dear
a gaudy little flop
attempt instead to be austere
not way beyond the top.

If I said I hurt
would you know where?
or claimed to speak truth
would anyone care?
or said it was cold
would goosebumps occur?
Specific details
I shall strive to proffer.

Surrender
Care too much - I'm burned
not enough I'm spurned
and thus at quite an early age
I subsequently learned
that space does not suffice
it takes a heart of ice
to stay alive as mortals wage
their war of nicey-nice
the smiles on their lips
gigantic to eclipse
the pitted swords of petty rage
that dangle at their hips
but lifetime as a grunt
has taught me to be blunt
and the stratagem at this stage
is forfeiting the front.

Altitude
For every graceful butterfly
that guilds the yawning sky
there's an earthbound warty toad
that's oh so shy
and glumly wonders why
it doesn't have the gear to fly
but as it mopes around the moor
and takes a moment to mature
it finds another mode
better than before
then understands for sure
you don't need wings to soar.

Bluster
It takes more and more dye
to further the lie
and there's more to deny
to keep downing the rage
it's no secret why
we're less and less spry
as winter winds sigh
and rattle the cage.

Scavengers aren't quite as sleek
as predators you see
for muscle tone need not be peak
when carrion is free
although you'd never hear from me
that anyone is weak
because I'd never want to be
accosted by a sneak.

"I see!" said the Blind Man
It's strange, but as my eyesight wanes
my focus reaches all-time gains
compelling me to try and learn
the discipline I chose to spurn
when I was lacking brains
a dizzy, tousle headed kid
with crazy dreams beneath the lid
that grew into a graying grouch
determined not to be a slouch
and make an honest bid.

On the Rocks (again)
I thought that slab of ice
would escape the eddy's embrace
it twirled around altogether thrice
remaining in its place
but then I heard a loud ker-plunk
and listened for a scream
until I saw a heart-shaped chunk
go bobbing down the stream

Sounding Off
Am I one among the sheep
another mindless bleepity-bleep
a scruffy, bleating quadruped
confused unless I'm being led?
consumed by all the vain pursuits
conceived by butchers in cahoots
who know the cheapest way to kill
is let the greedy have their fill
on most days I'm resigned to blah
today I simply utter "Bah!"

There's nothing more unjust
than unrequited lust
just ask the one whose hopes are bust
but that's the lovers bane
uncertain bids to ascertain
the length of the refrain

The crows commute
their morning route
traversing pointless toils
and like this crew
I'm searching too
for any signs of spoils
and while they caw
I set my jaw
determined to contend
with hopes my flight
attains new height
before I must descend.

Moving machines were made to move
so please proceed and help me prove
that mass in motion means you're free
(at least that's how it's meant to be).
Some go fast and some go slow
too many seem to need a tow
regardless of our rate of speed
we never quite outrun our need.

Scoop
There's nothing wrong with compassion
it's something we all should share
but watch for reporters that fashion
a reason they think you should care
by artfully shooting the issue
with emphasis on the oppressed
until you cry out for a tissue
while they walk away unimpressed
it's all about being awarded
an Emmy for changing our view
regardless how much they distorted
the facts with shovels of poo.

preferring to watch TV

which fostered communion

when time runs shy
you buy the farm.

Finite
Every sunrise sparks a thrill
that maybe we could yet fulfill
a destiny of grand design
forsaking hate as we refine
the art of learning not to kill
when others cross the line.
Every sunset stirs a twinge
of wonder that we still impinge
upon the vacuum dark and vast
which seems to be expanding fast
as we attempt to binge
on seconds much too scant to last.

the love you gain
is off the scale.

Call Me Pontius
If Jesus came back
as a strung out heroin addict
shuffling along
in such a drunken stupor
that you'd swear he was leaning
at a forty five degree angle
and looked at you
with tears streaming down his face
and mumbled about
needing seventeen dollars
for a bus ticket to Virginia
with so much pain in his voice
it hurt to listen
on one of the coldest nights
in recent memory
then asked if he could come in
to warm up,
what would you do?
I ran inside and started pouring coffee
while my wife most prudently
called the centurions
who showed up rather quickly
and subsequently took him away
to be persecuted
until they investigated
and found he was from Utica
but had a warrant in Buffalo.
They didn't want him,
apparently no one did.

no wonder the obsessed explode
when cleaning up the mess
but once I'm finished with the crud
I put away the broom
and save myself a pointless flood
of self-inflicted gloom.

that ruffled their orange and gray
absorbing the lengthening beams
despite the frigid extremes
and then went on their way
for spring is no closer it seems.

Sedatephobia
The howling winter wind is drear
and I can barely battle back the gloom
but soon the silence will be here
that settles after every storm is clear.
In later days one thought will loom:
the howling winter wind is drear
will I be blessed with someone near
to hold me when I face that doom,
the silence that will soon be here
that sidles closer each new year
despite the hopes that also bloom?
The howling winter wind is drear
it fills one with a certain fear
like parents watching children groom,
that soon the silence will be here.
We struggle to stay cavalier
as evanescent moments zoom;
the howling winter wind is drear
but soon the silence will be here.

Discombobulated
I'm trying to shut down my mind
but the switch is a challenge to find
I'm wandering halls
and groping the walls
denying the fact that I'm blind
a person in need of a break
that's hoping (for everyones sake)
to hear a click
pretty damn quick
before I have all I can take.
but the switch is a challenge to find
I'm wandering halls
and groping the walls
denying the fact that I'm blind
a person in need of a break
that's hoping (for everyones sake)
to hear a click
pretty damn quick
before I have all I can take.

Pigeonholed
A dozen grayish pigeons were in flight
surrounding one that looked completely white
as though they could rescind their compromise
by shadowing the flawless through the skies

ad nauseum
You have the right to annoy
I have the right to ignore
accost me once more with your ploy
and you might end up on the floor
you're also entitled to brag
as I am to likewise berate
or follow the instinct to gag
when you're telling us you're so great.

Out of Will
Everyone stopped
as the firemen chopped
and the temperature dropped
the ice was thick
they didn't need to be quick
I felt a little sick
things looked bleak
they pulled him from the creek
this world disowns the meek.
