Estimation

What's worth more:
a mansion on the shore
or pallets of the poor?

The loss of either one means pain
to those that wonder why in vain
for sentiments can't stop the rain

that starts to pour
as we debate galore
what's worth more.

  1. This is great! I love the cyclical message.

  2. An interesting poem here. People could debate forever on the question what's worth more, I think. Especially in an election year.

  3. Really timely, given the election and Sandy. I like the rhythm, too.

  4. So much said in so few words. I read it a few times and each time it drew me in deeper, kind of mesmerizing...

  5. A timely piece...felt, especially with the devastating effects of Sandy and the upcoming election.

  6. Excellent conundrum! Worth and value are two different things. The rich man's home may be worth more but has no less value than the poor man's only shelter.

Clever and wise! This could really start a chain of Socratic Method in one's head...

As usual, nicely rhymed and a delight to read.

  8. Very clever, and profound as well. There's always that question, and life should not be measured by dollars, but that bottom line is pretty pervasive. Excellent poem.

  11. I'm SO glad I had my coffee before reading this. I kind of had the same dilemma this morning...a what's worth more...coffee or cat food...to my mental well-being.
But yours is deeper and quite serious. So I'm glad I had my coffee first. Loved it.

  12. Excellent question. Definitely something we don't ponder as often as we should.

  13. Wisdom in poetry. If it's all you have, it's worth everything.

  14. Thanks everyone, these disasters really make one think and, I believe, put a higher value on compassion, one of the most precious things of all.

  15. Brilliant rhyming. I like how pithy the poem is as well - you don't waffle on about it - the sentiment is punchy.
