Today I watched a leaf's descent
it slowly wafted to the ground
while mother's limbs, all gnarled and bent
were shuddering with discontent
because the fiend called time had browned
her blustered brood without repent.
It's darker in the morning now
and night, it seems, comes sooner too
despite how much I disavow
the growing shadow on my brow
we all await the cycle to renew
what generation temperance may allow.
Bob,
ReplyDeleteThis is a perfect view of autumn. The impending winter, the darkness and in fact, the cycle of life itself.
If we had actually had a decent summer here in the UK, then it might make me sad, as summer departs. otherwise, I am looking forward to the colours and the warmth of the season.

What I loved especially about this poem is its rhyme and meter....very lilting to read......loved it!
ReplyDeleteAn antecipated Autumn, altough beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCertainly a beautiful time of year.....love your true capturing of it Bob! :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't mind autumn, but, as you say, the loss of daylight hours, and then the cold and mess of winter...yuck!
ReplyDeleteLovely poem :)
Your poem is gorgeous and autumn quite powerfully linked with the aging of loved ones, both young and old: The single leaf, the mother, the browned blood, the brow, temperance. Rare truth comes forth. I bow to you. And thank you for visiting my blog!
ReplyDeleteA really beautiful, lyrical poem,,great imagery too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Fall is my favorite time of year and I write at least one autumn poem a year so this is my obligatory one.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, Bob. I loved the way you mentioned the fiend called time...I feel the same way. We do indeed all wait for the cycle to renew, and unfortunately we have to wait some months for it to happen. What an impressive poem, and I thank you for taking part in the Think Tank.
ReplyDeleteI loved the view and how many different feelings and thoughts I had reading your words~
ReplyDeleteYOU captured the essence of the mixed emotions this season brings!
I loved it~
